hearth questions

Got a question?

Hey, I’ve a few questions…..

Got a Hearth Question?

We often get common questions about our slate hearths,
so here are a few common Q&A that may help….

Q.I have a gas or electric fire, will a slate hearth be suitable?
A. Yes, slate is an ideal product to sit your fire on and will look great with any fire.

Q. I’m having a large Wood /Coal / Multi Fuel Burner installed, would a slate hearth be suitable and strong enough for this?
A. Yes, the thickness of slate we use is 30mm or 40mm. This will give a very strong, sturdy and safe base for your burner to stand on.

Q. I’m tempted to buy a whole slate slab and cut it myself, is this easy to do?
A. Good question! If you’re handy with heavy cutting tools and confident enough to attempt to cut out a shape to fit in your fireplace, then yes you can cut your own.

Q. Do I need to have my slate hearth sealed?
A. No. This is a matter of personal preference. Sealing a slate hearth will not only help prevent the stone from staining if anything is spilled on it, but it also enhances the natural tones and colours. We can seal your hearth for you or there are various products on the market that you can get and seal it yourself. Worth doing a little research for your own peace of mind first.

Q What’s the difference in Riven and Honed slate?
A. Riven is the “natural” surface of slate and Honed is when the surface has been smoothed out by the machine to give a very smooth and satin surface.

Although Slate is the most common stone we use, we also work in sandstone, granite, marble and just about any other stone we can get our hands on. So if you’re looking for something or anything else made in stone, please do get in touch.
